The Lovers (1958, Louis Malle)

Films with unlikable leads are so strange to review. Do you applaud the director and writer for going against the grain to not coddle the audience or should you criticize it for painting a portrait of someone you kinda detest...? I guess this is when you fall back on strengths like the writing, camerawork, and cinematography which are all really good for the most apart. There's a few bumps with the over-wrought characterization of the "bored wife" but it tends to stay true to itself and it's characters.

The climax and resolution can be picked apart by denouncing it to just being an easy way out but I would have to disagree. The choices made by our protagonist are a bit shocking but should we really be THAT surprised? The credits roll and you begin to realize that this was all some kind of fairy tale. A fairy tale that sadly only exists in the minds of this irresponsible yet passionate couple that we're left with. Guessing Social Services wasn't around in France at the time...
